Cooling Foods for Summer

I am a big believer in using foods to aid and heal my body, my mind, my spirit.  It has been extremely hot here in Los Angeles and I've been using Ayurveda and it's methods to aid in cooling my body on the inside.  According to Ayurveda, each food item has it's own quality which governs it.  It is a lot deeper than this, but this gives you the general idea.  I have also been doing cooling yoga poses that eliminate the heat and fire in my system.

Ever notice how people tend to be more irritable, upset, angry, aggressive in extreme heat?  I've been doing well with eating these foods, doing sheetali breath, and the asana's.    Here's a list of foods to eat to cool the body.

Fruit:  Apples, Blueberries, Cranberries, Dates, Figs, Grapes, Limes, Mango, Melons, Sweet Oranges, Pears, Pineapple, Plums, Raspberries

Vegetables:  (Raw is best) Sprouts, Artichokes, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Celery, Cilantro, Corn, Cucumber, Green Beans, Kale, Lettuce, Parsley, Peas, Potatoes, Squash

Grains:  Basmati Rice, Cous Cous, Millet, Oats, Quinoa, Granola, Wheat

Beans:  Chick Peas, Kidney, Lima, Mung, Soy, Split Peas

Nuts/Seeds:  Coconut and Sunflower ONLY

Spices:  Cardamom, Cloves, Coriander, Cumin, Dill, Fennel, Mint, Rosemary, Saffron, Turmeric

Drinks:  Cool Water, Black or Green Tea, Hibiscus. Green drinks, Pomegrante, Pineapple or
Cranberry juice.
